While AVSE-TESOL’s core business provides Australian Government accredited TESOL programmes in Vietnam and Cambodia, we recognise that we’re not the only provider of quality teacher training in the ESL Space. If you already hold TESOL/TEFL certification of substance, our Cultural Immersion and Teaching Job (CI+TJ) programme might be what you need to launch your teaching English abroad adventure.
The CI+TJ programme at AVSE-TESOL in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh is perfect for folks who hold government-regulated TESOL/TEFL certification (nationally recognised training in the country of origin). What is ‘cultural immersion’?
Put simply, cultural immersion is about ‘living like a local’. That’s exactly what AVSE-TESOL’s CI+TJ programme facilitates. We remove the uncertainty of relocating to a new country (or a new city) and make sure you’re in a decent job teaching English in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Phnom Penh, paid at market rates – at record speed.
Here’s a snapshot of what’s included with AVSE-TESOL’s CI+TJ programme:
- Designated ‘go to’ person for pre-departure guidance (visa, insurance, vaccinations, and the like)
- Airport collection
- Referral to accommodation options for the ten-day CI+TJ programme
- Assistance with a local SIM Card and internet access
- Welcome party (in conjunction with our regular TESOL classes)
- City tour (in conjunction with our regular TESOL classes)
- Introduction to partner schools
- Six hours of observing ESL classes at partner schools
- Eight hours of teaching practice at partner schools (the first six hours are critically assessed)
- Hands-on employment support (referrals, interview preparation, CV development and the like)
- Guidance with changing visa status, permanent accommodation and other pertinent issues
The plan is that within two weeks (+/-), you’ll be ‘living like a local’ – and in a decent teaching job. With AVSE-TESOL’s CI+TJ programme, you’ll have a trusted partner by your side every step of the way.
We’ll meet and greet you at the airport and take you directly to your accommodation (door to door). Sorting out your cell phone with a local SIM card and accessing the internet will be priorities immediately after your arrival. In conjunction with our regular TESOL classes, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a Welcome Party in the evening on day one (free food and drinks) and a complimentary City Tour on day two. With a helping hand from AVSE-TESOL, you’ll know how to get to all the important places – shops, supermarkets, banks, restaurants, your embassy, transport modes and the like. You’ll even know where to find a decent coffee and, most importantly, a cold beer (or chardonnay).
Once you’ve acclimatised and know your way around your chosen destination, the CI+TJ programme at AVSE-TESOL focuses on securing that all-important first teaching job. We follow three simple and easy to navigate steps.
Teaching job component – step one:
Your designated support person at AVSE-TESOL will arrange six hours of observation classes at partner schools. What does this involve? We pair you with three or four experienced ESL teachers, and you spend time observing their classes. You’ll see different approaches to teaching and learning and get a feel for what it’s like working with local students. In addition, the observation classes provide a stress-free introduction to working as an ESL teacher in a new location.
Teaching job component – step two:
Step two of the teaching job component of AVSE-TESOL’s CI+TJ programme in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Phnom Penh involves you physically teaching eight hours of ESL classes (teaching practice) at partner schools. AVSE will provide the content for your classes and lesson planning support. The first six hours of teaching will be supervised and critically assessed by an experienced ESL teacher. You’ll receive constructive verbal feedback after each class. It’s all about identifying what worked well, what didn’t and doing even better next time. The last two hours in this phase are unsupervised – the ‘training wheels’ are well and truly off!
Teaching job component – step three:
Once you reach step three in the teaching job component of AVSE-TESOL’s CI+TJ programme, you will: 1. know your way around Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Phnom Penh, 2. have visited different schools while completing the observation and teaching practice classes, and 3. be raring to land that all-important first teaching job. AVSE-TESOL will help you prepare a Curriculum Vitae (Resume) that’s responsive to local expectations. If necessary, we’ll schedule mock interviews. Most importantly, we’ll refer you directly to the decision-makers in our extensive job placement network. The AVSE-TESOL team will be by your side until you’re in a paid teaching job.
