Overview
Vietnam is a premier destination for teaching English abroad. There is strong, ongoing demand for qualified foreign English teachers, including native and near-native English speakers. Competitive salaries relative to the cost of living and a quintessential expat lifestyle in a tropical setting make Vietnam attractive for recent graduates, gap-year travellers and seasoned educators alike.
Since 2009, AVSE has delivered ESL teacher training programs in Vietnam, supporting aspiring and qualified teachers into real classroom roles.
AVSE supports both new and experienced teachers to secure teaching positions in Vietnam by offering multiple, clearly defined pathways. These pathways support teachers at different stages — from first-time classroom entrants to educators moving into paid roles — and combine targeted training, real classroom experience, and hands-on job support.

Why Vietnam
Salary & Cost of Living in Vietnam
Teaching English in Vietnam offers a highly favourable salary-to-cost-of-living balance, particularly for foreign teachers seeking both financial stability and lifestyle flexibility. While earnings vary by location, employer type and experience, most teachers find they can live comfortably, enjoy a high quality of life, and still save money while exploring the best of what Vietnam and neighbouring countries have to offer.
Foreign Teacher Salaries in Vietnam
Foreign ESL teachers in Vietnam typically earn USD $1,000–$2,000+ per month, depending on location, hours worked, classroom experience and, in some cases, non-cash benefits such as housing. Language centres, public schools, private schools and international schools all offer different pay structures and schedules.
Teaching roles are commonly paid on an hourly or monthly basis. In many cases, employers quote net salaries and manage local tax obligations directly, making take-home pay clear and predictable for teachers.
Teaching schedules vary by employer. Language-centre roles often involve evening and weekend hours. Public school positions typically follow office-style hours, Monday to Friday. ESL teachers — particularly those new to the profession — usually spend additional time outside the classroom preparing lessons and resources.
Cost of Living in Vietnam
Vietnam’s cost of living is significantly lower than in most Western countries, especially for everyday expenses such as food, accommodation, transport and utilities. This allows teachers to maintain a comfortable lifestyle without the financial pressure they may have experienced in their home country.
By way of example, it’s common to find a main meal for under USD $5, with street food costing even less. A local beer typically costs under USD $1. A studio-style apartment can often be rented for around USD $250–$350 per month, depending on size and location. Utility charges can be less predictable, as they are sometimes set by landlords rather than billed directly by service providers, so monitoring meter usage is advised. Public transport is inexpensive, with bus fares typically around USD $1 for trips of up to 30 minutes, and fuel prices remain comparatively low by international standards.
Visas & Working Legally in Vietnam
To work legally in Vietnam, foreign ESL teachers must hold the appropriate visa and work authorisation. While the process can appear complex at first glance, Vietnam has a well-established system for employing foreign teachers, and schools are accustomed to supporting new hires.
Most prospective teachers enter Vietnam on a Tourist Visa and then transition to a Work Permit and long-stay residency visa, sponsored by a school. Core eligibility requirements include an undergraduate degree, government-regulated TESOL, TEFL or CELTA certification, and a clean background check. Non-native English speakers are also required to demonstrate recognised English proficiency (IELTS 7.0 or equivalent).
Work Permit applications are submitted by the employer and assessed by the relevant government authority, making accurate documentation essential. AVSE provides clear guidance on visa pathways, document preparation and timing, helping teachers transition into the Vietnamese workforce fully compliant with local regulations.
