Why Cambodia
Cambodia offers ESL teachers the opportunity to work where their passion genuinely makes a difference in the lives of local people. With rapid economic development, a young population and an insatiable demand for English language skills, the country presents rewarding teaching opportunities alongside deep cultural immersion and a distinctive way of life.
Teaching English in Cambodia offers:
- Strong demand for English teachers in a growing economy, with more than 60% of the population under 30 years of age
- No degree requirement for many teaching roles, with less prescriptive documentation compared to neighbouring countries
- Competitive salaries relative to the cost of living, supporting a comfortable lifestyle without excessive work hours
- Enviable reputation for safety, with Cambodia widely regarded as a stable and welcoming destination for foreign teachers
- Unmatched cultural immersion, where teachers are respected and daily life offers meaningful engagement with local communities
For teachers seeking an alternative to more crowded or highly regulated ESL markets, Cambodia offers a rare combination of accessibility, demand and cultural depth. It is a destination where committed educators can build experience, contribute meaningfully and establish themselves professionally within Southeast Asia.

Salary & Cost of Living – Cambodia
Teaching English in Cambodia offers a favourable salary-to-cost-of-living balance for teachers who prioritise rewarding work, cultural immersion and a comfortable lifestyle over maximum earnings. While salaries are modest by international standards, they align well with local living costs and allow most foreign ESL teachers to meet expenses comfortably and save modestly.
Foreign Teacher Salaries in Cambodia
Newcomers to the Cambodian ESL market typically earn USD $800–$1,200 per month (net), depending on qualifications, experience and the type of school. The majority of ESL teaching roles are based in “international schools” catering for students from kindergarten through to the end of high school.
Full-time teaching schedules involve around 25 classroom hours per week (+/-), Monday to Friday. Evening and weekend work is uncommon in Cambodian schools. As with most teaching roles worldwide, lesson planning and preparation mostly take place outside classroom hours.
Most employers quote a net monthly salary and handle tax reporting and payments on the teacher’s behalf, meaning foreign teachers are not required to manage the Cambodian tax process themselves.
Cost of Living in Cambodia
Cambodia’s cost of living is low by Western standards and broadly comparable with Vietnam. Everyday expenses such as food, accommodation and local transport are affordable, enabling teachers to maintain a comfortable lifestyle without financial strain.
By way of example, a Western-style main meal can be found for under USD $5, with street food costing even less, and you’ll pay under USD $1 for a local beer once you know your way around town. A comfortable studio apartment in central Phnom Penh rents for around USD $250 per month, though utility charges can vary depending on the landlord.
Local transport is inexpensive and widely available. Tuk-tuks are the most common way to get around Phnom Penh, with short trips costing around USD $1 per kilometre, depending on distance and negotiation. For travel beyond the capital, Cambodia has a growing bus network and limited train services to selected regional destinations.
Visas & Working Legally in Cambodia
Cambodia offers a relatively accessible visa framework for foreign ESL teachers, but choosing the correct visa is essential. While Tourist Visas are widely available on arrival, they are intended for short stays only and are not suitable for teachers planning to work, as they typically require border runs before employment can begin.
For this reason, most teachers entering Cambodia with the intention of working do so on an Ordinary (E-class) Visa, which can be extended in-country for up to 12-months with sponsorship from a school. This visa category provides a far smoother pathway into legal employment and reduces the likelihood of unnecessary border runs during the transition period.
Core requirements for legal employment typically include recognised TESOL, TEFL or CELTA certification and a clean background check. Unlike many neighbouring ESL markets, it is not mandatory for foreign English teachers to hold a university degree to work legally teaching English in Cambodia, although having a degree is certainly well regarded by employers and authorities.
AVSE provides clear, practical guidance on visa options, documentation preparation and timing, helping teachers navigate Cambodian requirements confidently and work legally from the outset.
